I can say that I loved how the fat got there, but I didn’t appreciate what it was able to do to my body. I loved the fat so much, I just had to let it go. The fact that belly fat “functions” separately from the rest of me, with it’s own hopes and desires, I figured it was time break up our unhealthy relationship and move on. We weren’t on the same page and it was starting to stifle me….there was little hope in our future together. I still have leftovers from the relationship that I just need to burn through, but it’s going to take time, and they say time heals all wounds.

When I was pregnant with my youngest child, I gained a lot of weight, and afterward I found myself in a shape that was unfamiliar to me. How did I get to this point? And more importantly, how was I going to fix it? I tried all types of workouts and diet strategies that did not work and even though I lost some weight and was smaller, I was still not achieving the results I was looking for.

I then looked into what belly fat really was and discovered information that motivated me to break the relationship OFF for good!

What type of fat is in my belly?

There are 2 types of fat that we associate with belly fat, visceral fat which is located around our internal organs underneath the muscle, and subcutaneous fat which is the layer of fat under our skin. The visceral fat has it’s own metabolic rate. It releases hormones into your body. It functions as it’s OWN organ and not to your benefit. It affects insulin resistance (connected with diabetes) and can you imagine, as it grows, it is squishing your organs. It has a poor personality and a bad attitude, and you can try and dress it up, but it’s not the most fun in public.

How do I get rid of it?

Well, the main thing is to stop encouraging it to grow. It’s like a lazy boyfriend stuck on the couch in front of the TV. Get rid of the TV or in the case of visceral fat, stop feeding the fat. Toxins, processed foods, artificial sweeteners and too much sugar in your diet all contribute to the growth of your unfavourable friend. After I cut out the soda, artificial sweeteners, and reduced my sugar intake, my belly fat got off the couch and was ready to leave. I opened the door for it leave with introducing resistance training and interval training done in the right way (with consistency), and our dysfunctional relationship came to an end.

Once I had the knowledge and understanding behind my belly fat (and see it for what it really was), I was able to seek out the help and have the motivation to go on without it. I guess it wasn’t meant to be.
