One of the culprits in obesity is eating habits. With fast food chains across the world, it is difficult to avoid being lured in. It is convenient and satisfies one’s hunger without having to cook it themselves. When a person makes the serious decision to have a Bariatric surgery they are agreeing to giving up their old eating habits and changing them for the healthier. This can be quite a challenge because like the saying goes, old habits die hard. It can be difficult to eat healthy because not everyone enjoys the taste of vegetables or salmon. The person may not even know how to cook meals. Fortunately, most often dietitians are assigned to the patient who assists in changing eating lifestyles for the better.

To get a head start, many patients begin transforming their diet before the actual surgery. But what foods are good to eat and which should a person avoid? Knowing the right foods will make it easier to stay on the right path to success. Diet plans rich in protein are common since the body will need high levels of it while healing after the surgery. It is easy to find healthy foods that contain protein. These include lean meats, eggs, beans, and dairy products. Right after the surgery, patients will be on a liquid diet which eventually switches to pureed foods. It is easy to still get the daily amounts of protein while being pureed. Protein shakes, scrambled eggs, low-fat yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, and mashed bananas are a few healthy options.

Since the stomach size is much smaller than before, it is important to eat foods that offer the best nutrients. It may be tempting to eat a handful of greasy French fries, but it will make the person full on the junk foods, instead of the healthy foods. This can cause the individual to decrease their weight-loss and perhaps even gain weight. Foods that are high in fat and sugar should be avoided. This also includes drinks that contain sugar or caffeine. Plain water is the best option.

Such diet changes need to be taken seriously. When having Bariatric surgery the patient needs to be aware that it is not a quick fix. It works together along with diet and exercise to lose the desired weight. There are many healthy options to discover which are tasty alternatives and will not only help lose weight, but also change the person’s health altogether for the better.
