Home Body Fat Monitors
Posted by admin in Prescription Obesity Drugs, Weight Loss on May 04th, 2009
Body fat monitors are devices that display weight characteristics in addition to the body fat composition as a percentage. Those who utilize these are able to determine what proportion of their weight consists of pure body fat and hence an estimate of how under or overweight he/she is can be deduced.
A home body fat monitor allows one to check their body fat percentage in the privacy of their own home. Many of these body fat monitors resemble a traditional bathroom scale and are used in a similar fashion. The two most popular home body fat monitors are body fat calipers and bioelectrical impedance devices. Body fat calipers are quite difficult to use and if beginners are not familiar with the use of these, an unrealistic reading may be displayed. However, bioelectrical impedance devices are much easier to handle and are considered just as accurate as hydrostatic weighing.
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a more sophisticated type amongst the body fat monitors. This device depends on the individual’s weight, gender, and age to calculate an accurate body fat percentage. The BIA functions from the discharge of a small electrical charge through the individual’s feet or hands. Many of these devices also have an in-built memory component that allows users to monitor their body fat percentage over time. Individuals can select from a variety of styles such as ones with an athlete or child related setting to meet personalized needs. Many of these body fat monitors also have a precise scale for added convenience. However, BIA is not suitable for pregnant women or those with a pacemaker.
skinfold calipers are body fat monitors that involve pinching the skin on three different areas of the body to determine body fat percentage. Many companies now have electric skinfold calipers that automatically perform all the calculations so the user is not left with any guesswork. Many of these also have a memory utility.
These days, body fat monitors are relatively inexpensive; in fact some of these are about the same price as a typical bathroom scale. Those who are attempting to lose weight may benefit from body fat monitors as it will allow them to determine the exact amount of weight to lose. This will also be practical for avid athletes who wish to maintain their desired body fat and weight range.
In a nutshell, body fat monitors are essential in determining a person’s body fat composition and hence their risk of health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and stroke
