Is your weight keeping you from getting that new job or maybe even keeping the job you have Unfortunately in today’s tight job market many employers simply will not hire overweight employees. I know this sounds like discrimination…and I guess it could be to a certain extent. Employers are being encouraged to offer incentives for their current employees to lose weight and get healthy and those currently employed can not be discriminated against because of their weight. However, that does not mean that a future employer has to hire you regardless of your weight. There are really two reasons why they might not want to hire you.

The first reason is usually related to physical health. If you look at this issue from the perspective of a future employer you might be able to understand their concerns. While the examples I will provide are not always the case, there are insurance statistics and studies to back them up. For example, in a recent study by Duke University it stated that fatter employees had “over 10 more days absent” due to injuries. That is 7 times higher than more trim employees. Issues that might affect hiring include the fact that overweight employees usually suffer from more serious health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease to mention just a few. This can drive the cost of provided health care through the roof and severely affect the bottom line.

The second reason for not being hired involves, in addition to issues affecting health, the employers experience with personal issues. Often times overweight employees also suffer in their personal life. They sometimes bring these issues to the workplace and this can affect the productivity of an entire group. Some of these personal issues might include depression, low self esteem, back pain issues requiring special accommodations, social acceptance and difficulty with job related travel.

I know that these examples are not applicable to everyone, and that there are many overweight people who suffer from none of these issues and are extremely productive. However, with today’s job market being really, really tight there are many well qualified people seeking the same position. If you were an employer and you were presented with two people with equal qualifications…who would you hire The person who is overweight or the person more nearly at their idea weight. In many cases the hiring supervisor has no choice at all and the decision is being made by the Human Resources representative. They are more than likely going to use insurance guidelines to make the final cut.

I know this article is blunt, but if this situation applies to you then you need to take steps to reduce the risk of not being hired simply because of your weight.
