Bariatric Surgery Financing
Posted by admin in Prescription Obesity Drugs on June 27th, 2009
Are you considering having the gastric banding procedure? If you are, bariatric surgery financing may be something that you will have to consider. While more and more insurance companies than ever before are beginning to cover this surgery, as well as the Medicare program, many individuals will still have to pay for the surgery out of pocket.
If you have insurance, your first move should be to contact them to find out if they cover gastric bypass surgery and if so, which types. At the time I had my surgery, my provider covered only the Roux-en-Y. Recently many insurance providers have added the lap band to their list of covered procedures. Your insurance company may cover only part of the procedure, but this should be your starting point. If you are covered through your insurance company, be prepared to do 3-6 months of pre-op paperwork, counseling and other appointments.
If your insurance plan does not cover this surgery, there are other options. Many bariatric surgery centers offer their own financing for bariatric surgical procedures. There are also financial institutions that specialize in offering financial assistance for medical procedures. Another option is the manufacturers of the Lap Band and the Realize Band. Both of these organizations offer financing for this surgical procedure. So, if you feel that the gastric sleeve is in the best interest of your health, there are several options that are available for the financing of this procedure.
There are many things to consider if you have to finance this surgery. What is the cost to you of being obese? Over the period of years, this cost will exceed that of this surgical procedure and this does not include the damage that being obese will do to your health.
