Is the Cost of Being Obese More Than the Cost of Lap Band Surgery?

If you are considering bariatric surgery, you can not help wondering about the cost of lap band surgery. if you have spent several years losing the same 20 pounds or have been unsuccessful at getting down to a healthy weight, gastric banding is not a bad option. But there are some things that you should know before you make an appointment for weight loss surgery.
First and most importantly, this surgery can help you get back to a healthy weight, but it is only a tool and not a guarantee. You are getting to get out of it what you put into it. And if you think you are not going to have to change your lifestyle to maintain this weight loss, you need to think again. This surgery will help you take off pounds and quickly, but you will have to take the same steps as anyone else to keep the pounds off.
Gastric banding, when all is said and done, will probably cost you less over time than being obese. Managing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and joint pain does not come cheap. And this is not even considering the risks that can accompany these conditions. The cost of bariatric weight loss surgery has come down in recent years. Medicare has begun paying for this life saving surgery, as well as, many insurance companies.
If you insurance company pays for this surgery, as mine did, it may not cost you much at all. I had a Roux-en-Y which is much more expensive than the lap band. The cost of this surgery was $31,000 and was covered completely, with the exception of the $250 deductible. The pre-op classes, testing and appointments were about $1,000. The lap band can run anywhere from about $10,000 to $20,000 and the good news is that both of the major manufacturers of the gastric sleeve offer financial assistance.
