OBESTY IN THE USA

We have all heard about the issues of obesity. Some of the issues include sleep apnea, hypertension, dubieties and stroke. Having one of these symptoms can contribute to another not mention the quality life of the obese person. For example: sleep apnea could lead to loss of sleep and heat arthymas.

Defining Overweight and Obesity

There are different definitions for adults and children.
According to the CDC weight is determined by weight and height to calculate a number referred to as the body mass index (BMI) Adults with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 are considered overweight.
A BMI higher is considered obese

The following is an example:

Height,- Weight Range, ——– BMI, ———-Considered,

5′9″… 124 lbs or less…….. Below 18.5……Underweight

……. 125 lbs to 168 lbs….. 18.5 to 24.9….Healthy weight,

……. 169 lbs to 202 lbs….. 25.0 to 29.9….Overweight,

……. 203 lbs or more…….. 30 or higher…..Obese

An important point to make is that BMI does not directly measure fat. I would like to make a point here. I workout with weights and used to participate in the power lifting sport. We would compete at a certain weight class. The goal was to left more weight for your weight class. Although my waist was at 30 and weighed 137lbs my BMI was high indicating I was overweight. This also happened to me while I was in the Air Force. I was in far better shape than most of the guys in my class; however, I was placed on the fat boy program. Not until the powers at be were able to actually determine fat content was I able to get off the fat boy program.

By only using this guideline a false determination on someone being overweight or obese is given. Alternative ways to measure fat have to be used to determine if someone is overweight or obese. Some of the techniques used are to measure skinfold thickness and waist circumference to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
