Are we overweight because we eat too much or because we are eating too little? News commentators, magazines, and tons of newspaper articles all focus on how much we eat. Nutrition scientists are beginning to propose the controversial new concept that we, especially Americans, are overweight, not because we are eating too much, but rather because we are eating too little.

When we look at loosing weight, we generally focus on calories and we know that a typical diet is overloaded with calories,, but just eating fewer calories is not the answer. This typical diet often fails to include a variety of essential vitamins and minerals. There are some 40 or more of these vitamins and minerals that are essential to the human body. These are very crucial nutrients we only get from dietary sources. If our diet does not provide these needed nutrients, our bodies signal us to keep on eating in an attempt to get what is needed. The result — our bodies are over fed and under nourished.

Study after study shows that food is the best source for most vitamins and minerals. However, many foods today are highly processed, therefore loosing important nutrients, and often our food choices do not include nutrient rich foods. Our diets need to include foods such as whole-grain cereals, dark green and yellow vegetables, fruits, milk, fish, lean meats and beans. These foods are rich in the nutrients our bodies require plus they are high in fiber which plays another important role in maintaining healthy weight.

Nutrition scientists are now beginning to also say that vitamin and mineral supplements help dieters shed excess weight. We must be careful here. Talking a daily multivitamin may be a positive first step, but we must not count on a pill alone to meet our nutritional needs. Further, we must be careful not to overdose on one or two vitamins or minerals such as zinc or iron while missing other essential elements our bodies need.

Weight control and healthy eating has become the newest marketing fad. Every food store is featuring the latest products. As consumers we must not believe everything that is advertised. It is important to become knowledgeable. We can easily over spend for fancy health food products that in fact may not be providing the nutrients our bodies need.?

If your body is over fed and under nourished, begin making positive changes today.? Add nutrient rich food to your everyday diet and supplement your food intake with quality dietary supplements.
