Not too long ago you could visit nearly any fast food restaurant and increase your meal size to larger portions. Just say “super size it.” It wasn’t uncommon and no one complained about the hefty sized portions until people began experiencing health issues and blamed the fast food restaurants.

Today some fast food restaurants have dropped the option to increase the size of a meal from their menus. Of course it’s really not hard to just order an extra side item or add another sandwich to your meal, something Americans have been doing for quite some time.

Yet fast food places aren’t the only ones making Americans fat. Frozen dinners from your favorite grocery store are another culprit. These frozen entrees have been increasing their portion sizes for quite some time and Americans are buying them without a complaint.

So it makes one wonder, who’s really to blame? Did the food industry see a weakness in us and take advantage of it as a majority of the world is suggesting or is it that we simply just don’t care enough about our eating habits, but refuse to take the blame?

Maybe the answer is both, but in all honesty it really makes no difference who is to blame because for the most part Americans are the ones with the power to control what they consume, not the food industry. We don’t have to consume extra food or even stop at a fast food restaurant to eat. Yet we do and then we’re shocked when we gain weight and begin to experience health issues like heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

We are all to blame and unless we do something about it to change our health, we’ll continue to experience things like obesity, heart disease and diabetes. So instead of putting blame elsewhere, maybe we should start by scaling back on those larger portions. Then maybe we should consume healthier foods that are not deep-fried and full of unnatural ingredients. Instead of complaining, start changing. It’s our body, not theirs. We’re in control.
