Let’s put it this way: obesity is a disease which, if not treated, will lead to complications such as heart-related diseases, stroke, diabetes, and a host of other chronic (and sometimes fatal) conditions. For long-term relief that do not require expensive trials and errors, some people opt for prescription weight loss drugs.

Candidates

Prescription weight loss medications are not for everyone. Only two types of people get prescriptions for weight loss drugs. First are the people whose BMI or Body Mass Index is 30 and above and are free of obesity-related diseases. Second are the people whose BMI is 27 and have signs of conditions related to obesity.

If you do not qualify with the above criteria, you are most likely not suited to use prescription weight loss drugs.

Types of drugs

The typical weight loss medications are only for short-term use. Other than that, there would be adverse affects on the patient’s body. Also, these drugs mostly comprise appetite suppressants and fat inhibitors.

The former are the types of weight loss tools that trick the brain to trigger satiation, thus curbing the urge and need to eat. The latter, on the other hand, are the types that prevent the processing and absorption of fats in the digestive system, thus causing fats to get flushed directly without being absorbed by the body. The FDA approved an elite selection of appetite suppressants and fat inhibitors for long-term use. For suppressants, only Meridia has been approved; Xenical (Alli) is the only fat inhibitor included in the FDA list. While these are prescription drugs, they can be bought over-the-counter.

To know if these drugs are suited for you, it is best that you consult your doctor. He alone can evaluate whether you are a good candidate or not, or whether there are other, far less invasive methods that he can recommend for you.
