Today, more than 72 million Americans, more than one-third of the adult population, are obese. Of this group of adults, about 13 million are morbidly obese and according to the gov/” rel=”nofollow”>Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16 percent of American children are obese. These statistics are alarming and many who are suffering with obesity are searching for ways to finally lose the weight and keep it off. A last resort for some obese people is bariatric surgery, but who qualifies for such a procedure

A person with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more is considered morbidly obese. BMI is determined by calculating your height and weight. Here are some examples:

- BMI is less than 18.5 = underweight range

- BMI is 18.5 to 24.9 = normal

- BMI is 25.0 to 29.9 = overweight

- BMI is 30.0 or higher = obese

Waist circumference is another way to check obesity:

- A man whose waist circumference is more than 40 inches.

- A non-pregnant woman who waist circumference is more than 35 inches.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is a way to treat obesity by modification of the gastrointestinal tract to reduce nutrient intake and absorption. The following are some of the main guidelines of who qualifies for this procedure.

- People whose BMI is 40 or above, meaning those who are at least 100 lbs overweight.

- People who have had significant failure in weight loss programs.

- People whose health is jeopardized by the weight but who are healthy enough to withstand the surgery. Bariatric surgery as any surgery procedure carries risk. It is imperative to have a thorough examination by your weight loss medical team.

- Motivation to succeed and the ability to comply with therapy and your surgeon’s advice regarding diet and lifestyle.

- People below the age of 60.
