According to the government, the vast majority of the populations in the USA and the UK are overweight. Many of these cases are to the point of obesity and it is said that this is a major health concern that will cost both nations untold sums of money in health care and weight loss program. Well, if the government says it is true, you can certainly rest easy at night knowing that it is can’t you?

But how accurate are these figures? It would seem reasonable to assume that someone who was truly obese would be blatantly obvious to a reasonable and fairly well informed person. Take a moment and picture someone in your mind whom you believe to be obese. What kind of visual image did you get in your head? Was it some extraordinarily large person, perhaps so overweight as to have a difficult time getting out and about? There are a great number of people like that.

Many people suffer from physical ailments that cause massive weight gain. Some people have other issues, which make it difficult for them and that result in weight gain. Some people have problems with their metabolism and gain weight simply by looking at food. However it happened, you should have had enough time to visualize that obese individual by now.

I am going to perform a mind trick here. I am going to tell you what the visualization you have in your head is. Picture Sylvester Stallone in the 1980’s during the Rambo and Rocky films! (These are truly works of classical art brought to film in case you have not had the dubious honor of viewing them yet) Even people not familiar with these fine films may know Sylvester Stallone however. That was the visual that came to your mind when you thought of a truly obese person correct?

So how did I do that? How did I know you were thinking about one of the healthiest actors in film when you were supposed to visualize a truly obese person in your head? Because according to government statistics, Sylvester Stallone is obese. He is not considered to be overweight but obese. This means that according to the US government, he is part of the health crisis the Western Nations are facing. According to the body-profiles in government statistics, you would be led only to this conclusion.

So how do they factor this into their equations? The two main considerations are body height and weight. Since it would be overly difficult and cost-prohibitive to conduct a thorough physical examination on every individual in the Western World, general conclusions are drawn on the largest common denominators. Not to make light of a very serious condition which afflicts many people but if that is obese, I wish I was too… at least according to “statistics”.

Hopefully you will not take offense to the content here but will see it for the humor that it attempts to use to lighten a serious situation. The bottom line is that statistics can be flawed just like opinions. Before you accept second-hand “facts” or even other people’s opinions about what constitutes being overweight, you need to look at your personal circumstances. Once all of the facts have been weighed, you may be able to look at yourself with a new, much lighter weight on your shoulders. If you do need to lose weight, you need to work at it wisely and not just accept something you hear as fact, even if it is statistically correct.
