Overweight and Obesity in the US

Posted by admin in Prescription Obesity Drugs on July 11th, 2009

It is not uncommon to see families sit in front of the television for hours, enjoying snacks and drinks the whole time. Walking to a nearby store is rare because almost everyone can afford personal means of transportation. You always have a car to drive, easy life. Occasionally, if not daily, the family has to be treated for lunch or dinner at a nice restaurant. Provision for vacations is never left out in the typical family budget, about going out of town for a quiet good time.

Let us take a look at statistics on US people. One in five children is overweight. More children are becoming overweight while the heaviest are getting heavier. About two thirds of adults are overweight and almost one third are obese. Nearly one third of adults are obese, of which 35 million are women and 28.6 million are men. Less than one third of adults are at a healthy weight, of which 38.1 million are women and 27.4 million are men. The cost of lost productivity related to obesity among Americans age 17 to 64 is $3.9 billion. The cost of physical inactivity is estimated at $24.3 billion.

This is already alarming enough. We have called for save the hungry child, save the whale, save the natural habitat, among the many other concerns. It is unfortunate that it does not immediately occur that people can join hands to help save the nation of billions of wasteful spending. I say “Wasteful” because it can be controlled, making better choices on healthier lifestyles.

Obesity does not spare lives of both adults and children. The epidemic is a known risk factor for diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood cholesterol, stroke, hypertension, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and some forms of cancer. These are fatal consequences, stoppable when proper action is taken in time.
