What is All the Fuss About BMI?

BMI is a valid measurement for most people. It will give you a good idea of whether you are at a healthy weight for your height. If you happen to be super fit, a rugby player or weight lifter then it is not the best measure for you. Otherwise it is probably OK.

One of the drawbacks of the BMI measure is that BMI does not take into consideration the distribution of fat in your body. A good measure that we use involves measuring your waist. This gives a good indication of whether you are carrying excess weight.

1. Find the mid-point between your lowest rib and the upper part of your hip bone.

2. Mark this point and measure around your waist with a tape measure. Make sure that the measuring tape is not too tight. It should be held tight enough so that you can breathe normally and is parallel to the floor.

A waist circumference of more than:

94″ - 102cm (40 inches) for females

81″ - 88cm (35 inches) for males

Gives an indication of an increased risk for health problems.

The connection between diet and lifestyle with health is clear. Unfortunately, over the last few decades, many people have become less active, there has been an increase in unhealthy convenience food and an increase in portion sizes. Obesity is a multi-factorial disease but simply, when a positive energy balance exists, body weight will increase.

The World Health Organisation state that obese individuals have a 50-100% increased risk of death compared with people of normal weight. Consequences for health if overweight or obese include hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, ischaemic stroke, certain types of cancer including endometrial, breast and colon, osteoporosis (wearing away of the joints), infertility, problems during pregnancy, gall stones, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, gout (joint pain caused by excess uric acid), sleep apnoea (interrupted breathing during sleep) and psychosocial problems.
