Herbal Remedies For Obesity

Posted by admin in Prescription Obesity Drugs on August 07th, 2009

When you think of major health concerns, terms like cancer or diabetes probably come to mind, however obesity is one of the biggest concerns in this country today. With nearly two thirds of the nation’s adult overweight and another one third obese, it is a serious situation.

The commonly accepted definition for obesity is someone who is 20-30% over his or her perfect weight according to gender, height and age.

Even if you overlook the cosmetic concerns, being obese can leave you vulnerable to a whole host of other medical problems. Some possibilities include heart disease, diabetes, strokes, kidney disease, infertility, cancer, gallstones, uterine fibroids and problem pregnancy. Added weight on the body can also increase the risk for arthritis as the weight puts undue stress on the joints.

Each person has a metabolism uniquely their own, is affected by many things including family history. Metabolism is the rate at which your body burns the calories you consume. Eating just a little, more than the body requires can lead to weight gain. Take for example eating just 100 calories more per day; this will lead to about a pound of weight gain per month. Some diet experts believe that a life that is quite sedentary is worse than consuming too many calories. This is because along with burning calories exercise also builds muscle mass, which will burn more calories when the body is resting.

Diet and exercise are one good way to battle the bulge, however there are also herbal products that will help in raising your metabolism and reduce the appetite. Of course, you should be conscious of the side effects and talk to your doctor before taking anything.
