Obesity in Child - A Sign of Our Times

Posted by admin in Prescription Obesity Drugs on August 09th, 2009

There was a time, not too long ago, when obesity was mostly a condition found in adults and it was even kind of a strange thing to find children suffering from obesity. But times have changed for bad and now we are witnessing how day after day there seems to be more and more obesity in children.

The prevalence of obesity has gone from 5% of the young population in the early 80’s to a current 18%, which is by all means a really big amount of boys and girls with an obesity problem. A sector of the population that will sooner or later suffer an impact from this condition in their quality of life and future health condition as they reach adulthood.

One of the main sicknesses that originates from obesity is Type 2 diabetes. This is a type of diabetes where the body produces insulin, but it doesn’t use that insulin as it should, provoking an increase in the glucose levels. It use to be that this condition was pretty localized in some ethnic groups and most of the cases were in adults . But these days diabetes has jumped all former boundaries and it is being found in all ethnic groups and at very early ages as a consequence of the increase in the number of obese children.

This is why it’s very important that children and their parents really understand the bad consequences of child obesity. It is not only about good looks but about life quality. The first steps in order to prevent or cure this condition in children must be linked to a higher physical activity and a decrease in the consumption of junk food.
