Possible Side Effects of Bariatric Surgery
Posted by admin in Prescription Obesity Drugs on August 10th, 2009
When deciding to go ahead with Bariatric surgery it is to be expected that the patient may encounter a side effect or two. Not only is it considered a major surgery, it also is a new beginning! Patients no longer have the same sized stomach as they once had. This means that their lifestyles have to be changed immediately. This includes eating habits, and exercising. Just like anything that is new, it takes time to learn the correct ways of doing them. This may be a factor in common side effects that occur in patients after the surgery.
Often in the first few months after the surgery there is a greater chance of the individual feeling nausea and even vomiting. This can occur for numerous reasons since the new diet and eating habits are still being learned. The common culprits that cause such side effects include eating to quickly, taking too big of bites, swallowing before the food is chewed enough, eating foods that are too dry, and consuming too much food at a time. Fortunately these side effects can easily be avoided by a few simple actions. When the fullness feeling is felt, it means stop. If a person over eats, there is a greater change of vomiting. Chewing the food slowly will also help by sending signals to the body letting it correctly indicate when it is full. Stomach discomfort can also be caused by dehydration.
It is important to drink 2 liters of water a day after the surgery and during weight-loss.
Dumping Syndrome is another common side effect that individuals may encounter after surgery. It is the result of rapid dumping of stomach contents into the small intestines. It happens when the person consumes sugary or greasy foods. Even though the symptoms are not life threatening, the side effects are very unpleasant. Weakness, nausea, sweating, rapid heart rate, and diarrhea are the typical signs of Dumping Syndrome. The best way to avoid it developing is to stay away from foods that are high in sugar and fat.
One other side effect that patients of Bariatric surgery can face is intolerance to cold. Patients may feel cold after they begin losing weight. This is because their metabolism is changing and losing insulating body fat.
Knowing the side effects after going through Bariatric surgery is important. The patient should be well aware of what to expect. It is best to do research and be honest and open about any questions that may arise. Even though the side effects sound alarming, they do not happen to everyone. Once the patient is well-informed they will have the information they need to avoid any possible side effect.
