We have all heard about the weight problem in America. Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise. Obesity usually begins in childhood between the ages of 5 and 6, and during adolescence. Studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. In some cases certain medical disorders can cause obesity, but less than 1 percent of all obesity is caused by physical problems. Here are THREE (3) Ways Childhood Obesity can be Managed and Treated:

1. Make Healthy Eating your first priority- The aim is to slow or halt weight gain so the child will grow into his or her body weight over a period of months to years. The only way to lose weight is to reduce the number of calories being eaten and a healthy diet will accelerate the weight loss. Since obesity often affects more than one family member, making healthy eating and regular exercise a family activity can improve the chances of successful weight control for the child or adolescent.

2. Exercise and Activity- Involving your child in a formal exercise program or school sponsored sport not only gets them away from the TV/computer/refrigerator but they burn up the excess fat that their body has accumulated. You may not see a change right away but know that just 50 minutes of exercise three times a week cleans up blood lipid profiles (In laymen terms that’s fats, waxes and phosphatides in the blood) and improves blood pressure.

3. Work with your physician- take your child in for an annual checkup and go over the diet plan you have come up with. Make sure the diet and exercise you have planned is correct for your child. The whole point here is to adjust your child’s weight so they’re in the healthy range. The last thing you want to do is cause damage.
